                                MISSION STATEMENT

                (U)     The 9TH Chemical Detachment provides Point
           Biolo@ibal and Stand-off Chemical detection 7capability to
           strategic sites throughout the theater of operation to
           provide early warning and confirmation of suspect@d chemical
           and biological attacks by Iraqi forces


                                    ORGANIZATION


                1.       9TH Chemical Detachment deployed from FT.
           Lewis, WA in two phases. The first group arriving in Saudi
           Arabii on 26 Jan 91 and consisting 6f 29 personnel. The
           second group arrived on 3 FEB 91 and consisted of 16
           soldiers. 9TH Chemical Detachment was organized into a
           Headquarters section and 12 teams with three soldiers each.
           Sevefi of the teams specialized in Biolo7ical detection only,
           while the remainin@ five teams per ormed chemical and
           biological detectiofi/monitorinq. Figure 1-1 depicts the
           organization and manning of the-9TH Cfiemical Detachment upon
           deployment to Saudi Arabia.
                2.   N   Prior to the units departure to Saudi Arabia,
           9TH Chemical Detachment began to Receive 54B soldiers from
           throughout the 9TH Infantiy Division. A total of             19
           additional soldiers were assi ned to 9TH Chemical detachment
           bringing the total to 45 solgiers deployed for Operation
           Dese@t Shield/Storm.
                3.     rm     Between JAN 1990 and MAR 1990 9TH Chemical
           Detachment employed 12 teams in CM/BIO missions to the
           following   units   CENTCOM, MARCENT, CENTAF, SOCC M, and
           ARCENT. Each team remained with their assigned unit until
           the end of hostilities. Due to the late arrival of some of
           the teams, unit cohesion could not be established before the
us inhibiting the capabilities of the
           teams. There were no personnel turnover during the entire
           operation.
