                                  9TH CHEMICAL COMPANY



                                        OVERVIEW


                 The 9TH Chemical Detachment provided point biological
            and stand-off chemical detection caidabilitiei using the XM2
            biological sampler and the XM 21 chemical det&ctor. The
            detachment was attached to the Foreign Materiel Intelligence
            Battalion (FMIB) for operations, rations, administrative,
            training    ucmi,    ersonnel and logistical support.         The
            Detachme@t was a@tached to FMIB due to similar-inissions to
            collect chemical and biological samples. FMIB had already
            established the procedures for the evacuation of samples
            from the KTO to CONUS laboratories for detailed analysis.
            The Detachment consisted of an eight man head uarters
            section, seven biological       detection    teams   anJ     five
            chemical/biological detection teams.
                 The Head5uarters element     provided all the detachments
            logistical, a ninistrative and maintenance support. The
            de achment    headquarters    was based with the--Battalion
            operations section. An additional headquarters            element
            deployed forward to further expedite logistical support to
            the teams just prior to G-Day.
                 Each Biological detection team consisted of a team
            thief and two biological detection NCO'S. Three of the teams
            had XM2 biological detectors and the remaining four teams
            had the PM-10 commercial samplers. The PM-10's were deployed
            to the units covering giyadh and Dhahran due to its aidkward
            size and shape.
                 The five chemical biological detection teams consisted
detection NCO'S.
            Although biological detection was the primary mission, both
            systems were de@loyed simultaneously providin@ dual mission
            coverage.
                 Two captains from CRDEC, Edqewood Arsenal, MD were also
            attached to the Battalion to pro@ide mission planning. They
            provided assistance with.logistics And technical expertise
            in the conduct of our missions.
