food with bare hands, cutting meat with an entrenching tool on a
piece of cardboard laid on the ground, etc). After extensive
reports and recommendations on the problems noted the 401st
converted to feeding operational rations to include NATO rations,
Saudi canned products and MRE's (listed in order of EPW
preference). The 403rd continued to feed A rations because they
said the EPW's preferred them. The majority of the problems were
gradually resolved with much coaxing and help from veterinary
          personnel.

Recommendation for future operation of EPW Camps:
          1. Each MP Camp should have multiple MKT'S, staffed by at least
one experienced foodservice NCO each in order to prepare hot
rations. Also trained food service personnel should be available
for supervising the preparation of rations for unit personnel.

          2. If hot A rations can not be prepared in a sanitary manner only
          operational rations should be fed.
          3. Experienced, well trained Preventive Medicine personnel, in
adequate numbers to perform the mission are essential. Expertise
is required in food preparation and storage, f ield sanitation,
water sanitation, insect and rodent control, sewage and garbage
          sanitation.

          4. Centralized, properly organized Ration Breakdown Point
operated by trained Class I personnel with adequate facilities and
equipment for the proper storage and handling of rations.

          B IN:

The mission increased in Bahrain with the addition of the 6th
Fleet Hospital, the AFRC Cruise ship and 4 military working dogs at
Sheikh Isa AB. As a result of the increased mission and a decrease
in mission in the Dammam area CPT Whippo and SGT Ralph were both
moved to assist in Bahrain. Mission included sanitary inspections
of commercial food establishments, food inspection at Sheik isa AB,
inspection of food procured locally for consumption at ASU and the
Cruise ship, and care of MWD's at Sheik Isa. In addition CPT
Whippo provided PM assistance in foodservice sanitation at units
where this assistance was not available.

Unit personnel had to turn to the Navy for support f or
billeting and rations when the 47th Field Hospital departed.

          KUWAIT:

In late February COL Alm went to Kuwait with a task force from
the 3rd MEDCOM to evaluate the need for veterinary support in the
