X E SOLDIER INFORXRTXON GUIDANCE
Elements of the 101st Airborne Division (jlir Assault) bav* been
notified by Department of the Defense for deployment to Saudi Arabia.
Preparation for movement of forces is currently underway* Exact times of
movement, exact missions and deployment locations are unknown at this
time, Alsoo, we do not know the duration of the deployment.
Soldiers are encouraged to discuss the operation with their
families* However# numbers of soldiers,, deployment times and locations
are still classified.
During the exercise,, named Desert shiel4# U.S. forces will work
together with those of Saudi Arabia and other nations to preserve the
integrity of Saudi Arabiao, and dater further aggression. Through their
presence, as wall as training and exercises,, these multinational forces
will enhance the overall capability of Saudi armed forces to defend
their kingdom.
The Arabs are very sensitive about the basing of foreign troops on
thier soil* American forces should avoid any comments or actions which
could lead to the conclusion that our deployment could be permanent* We
should stress the defensive and temporary nature of our missions while
emphasizing that we will stay as long as we are needed.
While in the area# through training and exercises, American forces
will interaot with local forces* We are guests of the host government
and it is imperative that we show the proper respect to our host's
nationals. The Arab culture possesses many customs different than our
own. certain customs and gestures which are meaningless in our society
can have significant meaning in the Arab society.
The use of alcohol is restricted by the Moslem religion and
prohibited by many host countries in the area of operations. In
e taken into the theatre.
Pornography and sexually mmlicit literature are equally
unacceptable in the Arab society and will also not be taken in theatre.
Always shake hands whenever you meet an Arab and when you leave him.
Never sit and expose the sole of your shoe or bottom of your feet to an
Arab -- it is an insult.
in conversation, generally take the lead from what the Arab brings
up but avoid initiating personal questions* Do not ask questions about
the women in an Arab family.
Arabs take friendship very seriously. Whereas Americans form quick
and casual froindships,, the Arab concept of friendship is one of
duration and intensity. Before the Arab enters into a friendship he must
find out all about you to see how much influence you haver what you can
do for him and if you might embarrass his. Expect a healthy interest
from the Arabs in your social,, professional and academic background* not
only will you affect your credibility but more importantly you can
seriously harm an Arabla standing and that of his family* Once a
friendship is formed, you can expect the Arab to use all his influence
and that of friends to assist you.
