Remember#, however,, that the Arab system of friendship balances
favors against obligations. When favors are asked by an Arab,, never give
a flat "no$$ because it will signal a desire to and a friendship*
Touching and holding hands with a@rs of the same sez in public
in acceptable and demonstrate* friendship. Touching or kissing a @ era
of the opposite sez in public is considered extremely bad taste and
     obscene.
ikrabs stand very el*** together when talking. Americans may find
this uncomfortable,, but should not back away. I
Do not be impatient with the local people. If you huM,, nothing
will got don** novevert if you arrive too late for an appointment you
are publicly insulting the individual. I
ilrabs do not accept or give criticism directly. Even constructive
criticism of an Arabia work or ideas in public is considered an insult.
it is especially rude to contradict a person or status of a superior in
rank or age, An Arabss suggestions and ideas should always be given
recognition* If criticism is required,, take the Arab aside and
privately and gradually lead up to the subject in an indirect and
tactful way* American "frankneast' is always too direct and usually
misunderstood as criticism. Arabs understand and appreciate tact
because it protoots public image, avoids insult and displays culture.
Do not talk down to someone because he doesn't speak English well.
Do not take pictures of military or civilian installations and
equipment, military or civilian police and civilian airport or seaport
facilities without permission of the host country. A3Lso,, do not
photograph people at close range (particularly women) without
     permission.
When asked about a subject,, dontt respond with III donlt know,, but I
ill never be listened to again. Answer,, '$Let me
show you how to look up that information,," or Ili must see my superiors,,
     come back in an hour."
Do not initiate conversations with Arab women in public.
And# finally# when offered food or drink, accept it.
Remember,, when in someone *lease housaj, act as they would want you
to, and especially in this type of situation* By doing so* you are
doing your part to make this multinational effort a success.
