the 92nd for command and control. This brought the battalion

strength to some 900 soldiers and provided great additional

horizontal construction capability. Over the next two months, the

battalion would complete 41 engineer missions, including 244

kilometers of MSR (15 kms of which was asphalted with a single

surface treatment), eight concrete helipads, laying over 2,400

square feet of airfield matting, and 17 other unit life support

projects. These included constructing earthen berms, building

access roads, digging garbage pits, constructing defensive

positions, and building shelters for units' class IX storage needs.

As missions came in, it became apparent horizontal assets were

the critical requirement-. An example was MSR Cadillac, one of the

corps' construction priorities and an important lateral passageway

Northwest for the 24th ID (MECH). The battalion task organized its

earth moving platoons OPCON to Alpha Company and, except for the

single surface treatment work, Cadillac was completed 5 December

1990. Other high priority supply route missions, such as MSR

Volvo, gave the 92nd experience which was to prove useful during

            the upcoming Desert Storm phase.

Although not as critical as horizontal missions, vertical

missions kept our carpenters equally busy. Major vertical missions

included : complete renovation of the 24th ID (MECH) battle staff

vans (map boards, tables, light fixtures, and map racks); extensive

rehabilitation of the joint 24th ID (MECH) PMO and Saudi civilian

police relocatable office trailers; placement of five concrete

maintenance pads for the 24th ID (Mech) DISCOM and five concrete

e. Concurrently,

the 92nd provided daily, heavy equipment to neighboring units for
