observing auspicious activity around the base camps, the 92nd did

not experience any terrorist incidents. The concern over SCUD

attacks was often unclear. The most useful source of information

and early warning on the SCUD threat was from an ADA unit in our

base cluster. It was not until January that the SCUD's

ineffectiveness become apparent. Additionally, a viable enemy air

            threat never materialized.

The intelligence community's main concern was timely

intelligence summaries, a problem that continued throughout the

campaign. Trends observed ranged from the inability to assess and

compile massive amounts of raw data into timely intelligence

summaries, to the inability to reproduce and disseminate the final

copies of summaries. Attempts to automate the intelligence

community were limited. At one time, intelligence summaries were

disseminated on computer disks. However, as the lines of

communications were extended, the timeliness of intelligence

            summaries was soon greatly degraded.

The speed and distance of the ground offensive also limited

the S2 section's intelligence capabilities. In addition to the

lack of daily summaries, the sheer distance between units (over

hundreds of kilometers of MSRS) , hampered simple SPOT reports and

periodic updates. With the Iraqi's inability to see the

battlefield, our intelligence community was not fully tested nor

were our shortcomings a factor. While not engaging any Iraqi

forces, the 92nd did handle two enemy prisoners of war.
