            ANNEX B - INTELLIGENCE

Iraqi forces invaded the nation of Kuwait on 2 August 1990.

The United States reacted by alerting CENTCOM, assigning it XVIII

Airborne Corps, and immediately deploying it to Saudi Arabia as a

deterrent against Iraqi invasion plans for the Kingdom of Saudi

Arabia. The 92nd Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy) was alerted for

Operation Desert Shield on 7 August and S2 personnel started

searching for sources of information and compiling information

received from the G2, 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized).

In addition to the primary task of gaining an overall picture

and understanding of Iraq and the entire Kuwait Theater of

Operation, the S2 section had to solidity a working relationship
with the G2, 24th ID(M), a relationship that previously had little

interaction. The initial focus 'of the intelligence collection was

on the enemy situation, terrorism, terrain, weather, and maps.

From the start, information wag available and massive, but often

lacking analysis and consolidation. Maps were so critically short

that they were personally managed by the 02.

By the time the 92nd deployed in late October, the S2 section

had established a solid information base and intelligence

estimates. The 92nd's primary threat throughout the deployment

would be air attack, surface to surface missile (SCUD) attack, and

            terrorism/unconventional forces attacks.

Once on the ground in Saudi Arabia, the S2 responsibilities

toward security matters became real. Force protection was always a

concern both at Damraan and at all base camps. The 92nd maintained

perimeter security 24 hours a day, and periodically rehearsed base

he use of reactionary forces. While occasionally
