C. Recommended action: The decon equ,-nment needs to be
stored in a 1 1/2 ton covered trailer. The contingency stock
should be stored in a protected shelter, preferably a plastic
l.ined bunker.
4. Observation: Lack of two cycle oil tor @417 Sana'.o@.
A. Discussion: Despite reassurance from Brigade that two
cycle oil was easily procurable, none ever surfaced through
supply channels.
B. Lessons learned: Units had to rely on local purchase
for two cycle oil. The local purchase amoun7@ was adequate, but
slow to reach the units. 30 weight heavy duty oil is a substi-
tute listed in the TM, but as I understand, tne MI-7 requires
extensive service after build up of the residue (approximately 20
hours). 30 weight oil could be used in an emergency.
C. Recommended action: Units should be allowed a 'basic
load' of enough two cycle oil for 20 hours for training per
quarter, and 100 hours for actual decon operations. This would
amount to approximately 20 quarts per unit.
S. Observation: Lack of plastic covering for bunkers.
A. Discussion: Bunkers were built promptly after units
arrived. The best place for plastic is above the bunker, and
under soil, which absorbs liquid contamination. The battalion
received this plastic sheeting well after most bunkers were
built.
B. Lessons learned: I recommended to all unit NBC NCOs to
scrape the soil off the top of the bunker and put it back on top
of the plastic sheeting. Very few took the recommendation, but
the plastic was still secured on top of the bunkers. This re-
sulted in numerous holes in the plastic.
C. Recommended action: Local purchase; of plastic betore
leaving home station would facilitate the proper construction of
bunkers. This is especially critical in a high chemical threat
environment.
6. Observation: Alternate power supply tor MSAI alarms in short
supply.
A. Discussion: Due to short supply of BA351'[/Us, we made
an attempt to obtain an alternate power supply. The alternates
recommended by Brigade NBC were a cable which could be spliced
directly into the M8AI and the M10AI power supply (which is
recommended by the TM). We were already having difficulty ob-
talining NBC related.supply, and Brigade was of no help I'n procur-
ing these alternate power sources.
B. Lessons learned: We finally obtained one MlOAl power
