V

of Foreign Affairs, the Russian, Soviet Minister of Foreign Affairs,
that the meeting place will be in the Jalibah airport. Then after
that we knew that this was the. pl?a~ce.

GEN SCHWARZKOPF (US): We, I~w~ill4Ibe very honest with you. The reason
why we changed from Jalibah,~to here--there was a great deal of cluster
bombs and ordnance all over that area. It's a very dangerous area.

LTG AHMAD (I): The change of place is not the question, the question
is this place was empty and we agreed to sit and negotiate at this
place and then now it is already occupied with your forces. At that
time it was not. Some of the points on the map we have some of our
soldiers and some of our buildings and our places there.

GEN SCMWARZKOPF (US): I would be happy to discuss the line now
think the provision is such though that anyone who is wearing orange
on their vehicle is

LTG ANMAD (I): Well, not to have any incidents or conflicts, now you
know where the line where our troops are, the position, you can
withdraw a certain distance back and we can do the same as well and
leave an area -

GEN SCHWARZKOPF (US): That is what I was hoping this line would be.
We will draw 1 km back from that line.

LTG AHMAD (I): Some of the points we have already some buildings, and
some installations, and now they are already existing there, in
"Kasha" for instance. To us it doesn't mean anything, but civilian
people are there. Some installations are there already. Just to be
sure that there is no empty area or space now where we'll j~st bring
some soldiers or an armed force or something to that place. Whatever
is empty we will keep it like that,

GEN SCHWARZKOPF (US): We will not move If you can agree to this
line we will not move any of our ~orces to take other areas. I just
want to make sure - -

LTG AHMAD (I): We suggest that the line, because to check this map
now we are need a lot of time to see each point and who's there and
come back. Let's just suggest that. Wherever our troops are now and
wherever your troops are now we just go back 1 km and that will be

GEN SCNWARZKOPF (US): My problem is I know exactly where my troops
are, I do not know where your troops are and we tried to draw this
line based upon where I kno~ my troops are

LTG AHMAD (I): Then if this is the case we would like to take the
opportunity to check the line take it with us to check.

GEN SC?{WARZKOPF (US): Good.

LTG AH?~AD (I): If you want to have a gentleman's agreement sort of to
agree right now that wherever your troops are right now just go back 1
km. And we will do the same and we will draw this as a line.
