Since these separators are only 92% (sca' aight be as high as 94%)
efficient. auch dust still gets to the engineo. co-pressor blades

section plug dne to the silicon in the sand turning to glass
plugging these cooling p.s sages. Larger particles dause actual
£Spact damage. Ccopressor (and engine) perfonance deceases ~:rtil
a stall condition is reached.

Zn any aircraft that has air driven gyros, there are K2P'A filters
in the systea to filter out particles ~i i-ll as 0.3 nicrons
(cigarette Sno~e) to p:~~ct theae bearings. Those filters aust
also be serviced to protect the instruz~ts. -

ILigh temperatu:o, and at, tines high altitude enn'ironaents.

        1. lircraft li)~ small' Cessna's, have ~~~ s~all air
filters, in the fo= of small panel filters. SOne of the filters
are mo~nted right ~der, and ~net behind the spinner, while ot1~ers
1i~. on ~~lti-tngine aircraft, are :~o~nted i~ an air duct leading
to the engine. They have a relatively short service life, and must
be sonitored carefully. Those filters too, an be cleaned up to 6
tiaes.

        2. A potential problem exist~ in these filters, where if
they are front mounted, and the aircraft flies through a rain storm
and gets wet (probably a remote problem in the ~(i~d1e last) the
restriction of the filter will increase dramatically! The filter
can actually be suc~ed into the intake and carburetor. This has
caused :~ore than one airplane to lose an engine and crash. Also,
watch the gyro filters.

        I. ~ring co~voy operations, keep the vehicles far enough
apart to prtv~nt trailing vehicles from getting lost in the dust
clouds of leading vehicles.

        2. Watch `rhere you park. Avoid tires digging in" sandy
soils. Deflate tires to get aore surface area thus more mobility
in soft sand.
