-equipment designated for use by Division engineer task forces.
                       (4) Major OTT relieved by Major DUMONT.
                   B. TRAINING: Ed Marine Division assigns training sector for Bth Tanks
north and west of Jubail along Tapline Road and south of Thunderbolt
Range Complex. Ammunition allocation provides for zeroing of tanks
and individual weapons only. MCAOCC CAX-type training for reserve
units directed by I MEF. Sth Tanks scheduled initially for 7 day
package at Thunderbolt Range. CO and principle staff discuss
operations with 3d Tank Battalion staff vicinity of Abu Hadria and
gain valuable insight from that liaison.
                   C. OPERATIONS: Initial concern is the conduct of Division breaching
operations in Kuwait. 8th Tanks attempts, unsuccessfully, through
sand-table discussions and point papers to establish the tank
battalion as the maneuver unit to conduct breach operations for the
Division. Sth Tank's breaching concept overruled by Ed Marine
Division formation of engineer controlled breaching task forces.
Scout platoon formed from TOW Company assets with Capt DAVIS assigned
as Scout Platoon leader. Bn forward CP established by Capt AHERN on
31 Dec 90 as tank companies begin phased movement to the training
                       area.
              3. 1 JAN - I FEB 91, UNIT TRAINING IN SAUDI ARABIA
                   A. CDC LOCATIONS AND DISPOSITION: Alpha and Bravo CDC established
initially along Tapline Road to monitor company movement from Camp 13
bout 8 kilometers west
for better security and access to Thunderbolt Range. Static CDC
established in both locations as no AAVC7Pl could be provided. Excess
personnel allows for two fully functional command groups, physically
separate. C-7's arrive by 14 Jan 91 during TEECS sponsored CAX
                       training.
                   B. TRAINING: Primary concern is tank maingun zeroing with service ammo
at Thunderbolt Range. MCAOCC sponsored training for the battle staff
and Company Commanders includes 11-13 Jan, STAFFEX at COC, 14 Jan,
ASCEX/FSCEX at Thunderbolt Range, and 15-16 Jan, FSCEX and FIREX at
Thunderbolt Range. All but the FIREX was done as a TEWT. After
movement north to vicinity Jaba Huryab and attachment to 6th Marine
Regiment, focus of training was maneuver training. Each battalion,
including Sth Tanks, conducted maneuver training with several
different task organizations. Frequent cross attachments with the
other battalions in the regiment required flexibility and rapid
planning by the battle staff. Training scenarios included: movement
to contact, hasty attack and defense and passage of breach lanes.
Virtually all battalion level training was conducted during daylight
                       hours.
                   C. OPERATIONS: 8th Tank Battalion's first major operation was a'100 mile'
road march of all assets from the southern training area to Jabal
Huryab. The operation was conducted in two days with organic vehicles
only. (18-19 Jan 91) Two battalion positions occupied in the Jabal
ombat power
oriented north and trains to the south.
              4. 1 FEB - 23 FEB 91, UNIT TRAINING WITH 6TH MARINES
                   A. OPERATIONS: Enemy spoiling attacks into Saudi Arabia cause the
premature movement of 6th Marines north to occupy defensive positions
along the Saudi-Kuwaiti border in the Ed Marine Division zone. Road
march north and occupied the southeast corner of the regimental zone
as the regimental reserve. "A" Company is attached to 2/2, "F"

                                                    16
                                              UNCLASSIFIED
