a. Review: This phas e included the arrival in SWA of Sth Tank Battalion
up to the period of movement to the field and tank company's BZO at
Thunderbolt Range complex. During this time, the major thrust was on
desert acclimatization by individual Marines, the off loading of MPS
ships and receipt for equipment and the preparation of that equipment for
combat readiness.
b. Mission/Tasks: The key missions for he S-4/Logistics section during
his phase were, (1) prepare tanks for combat by conducting maintenance,
drawing and loading ammo (BA and 1 DOP) and installing reactive armor,
(2) receipt for and conduct LTI's on all MPS equipment, and (3) to
complete the make-up of all TE shortages identified in phase 1.
c. Goals/Accomplishments: On January Bth, Capt J. J. Bryant joined the
battalion as Tank Maintenance Officer. During this same period the
following accomplishments were made: (1) All tanks of/from MPS shipping
were LTI@D with SL-3 shortages noted, (2) all tanks were rated as combat
ready, (3) a separate maintenance detachment was formed and stationed at.
the port of Jubail for the MPS off loaded tanks and for eleven mine
field breach tanks received from 2d Tank Battalion, (4) the eleven tanks
from 2d Tank Battalion were all maintained to a combat ready status (9 of
which were initially identified as inoperable), (5) twelve mine plows,
mine rakes and rollers were installed on tanks designated for task force
breach teams A/B, (6) BZO ammo, plus a BA and 1 DOA of ammo was drawn
from ASP 1 and loaded on all tanks, (7) Five, 5 ton trucks were provided
to 2d MarDiv on a daily bases to assist with their lift requirements, and
(8) on 29 Jan 1991 the maintenance det at the port of Jubail rejoined gth
Tanks Maintenance Platoon
d. Acquisition/Testing o; New Equipment: In addition'to the mine plows,
the Bn acquired two mine rakes which increased the mine clearing
capabilities of the M-GOAI tank to 90%.
e. Test/Modification of Doctrine: Because of the task force breach
teams Alpha/Bravo concept, on 20 Jan 1991 the maintenance plt attached
out a separate contact team to breach team alpha for tank maintenance
3. Period from i Feb - 28 Feb 19'91
a. Review: This time period included combat operations. Much of the
time before the war was directed toward rehearsal and training,
providing CSS to 8th TkBn under combat conditions. The exercising of
Combat Service Support Det-26 (CSSD-26), Direct Support Group - 2 (DSG
2), and Direct Support Command (DSC) proved valuable because the
battalion was dependent upon these units for its support.
b. Mission/Tasks: During this time frame, the main mission of the
B-4/Logistics section was providing Combat Service Support to 8th TkBn,
and Tank Maintenance support to task force breach teams Alpha/Bravo.
