        VI.  Prognosis:
             A.    Mortality:                                                             DIAGNOSIS AND @ATMENT OF EXOTIC DISEASES
                   1. Treated: very little, if any, mortality.                               OF TACTICAL IMPORTANCE TO US CENTCOM
                   2.    Untreated: 10-40% depending on clinical situation.                                        FORCES--1991
             B.    Prompt recovery with therapy: usually better in 24 to
                   48 hours.

             C.    Untreated: fever lyses in 2 weeks; mentation rapidly
                   returns to normal; 2 to 3 months may be required for
                   return of strength.

             D.    Relapses occur rarely, but are more likely if tetracy-
                   cline or chloramphenicol are prematurely stopped.

             A.    Insecticides:                                                                            OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES
                   1.    Application of insecticide to clothing of all                                            FORT DETRICK

                         clothing of individuals at particular risk.

             B.    Hygiene: command emphasis on personal hygiene and
                   cleanliness of clothing.

             C.    Disease reporting to higher echelon medical authori-
                   ties.
