Engineering Tasks
The beddown of deploying people and aircraft was one of the
civil engineered primary wartime tasks. In force beddown'
engineers provided the minimum expedient facilities necessary for
deployed units to become operationally ready and to survive enemy
attack. The amount of effort varied according to the number of
forces to beddown' the mission, and the existing base
infrastructure. The engineers taskings upon arrival at a base
fell into four main categories. Priority One taskings included
activities such as runway preparation' runway lighting and
navigational aid site preparation and installation, utilities, fire
protection, faculty siting and latrines.Priority two taskingscomprised aircraft ramp and apron sweeping, ammunition storage areas, aircraft revetments, and erection of facilities. Priority
Three activities included environmental and sanitation concerns,
facility hardening, and coed construction. Priority Four tasking
involved the basic operation and maintenance of the base and
continued training. Services personnel played an important part in
force beddown by providing the food for deployed personnel. This
could mean either managing the MREs or manning the dining faculty
when it was operational. Oftentimes, personnel from every
organization pitched in and helped erect tents and other facilities
to have a place to sleep, eat, and work. Of course, each site and
