operational at Diamond Station II on 18 January. Engineer missions

soon found the 92nd extending their LOCs and living well forward of

their doctrinal area of operations. While doctrine would put the

92nd in the Corps rear area, the importance of establishing forward

logistic bases in preparation for the offensive, put the 92nd in

the current covering force area. On 14 January, the 92nd was

called upon, along with other Corps combat engineer units, to

support the lgt Cavalry Division, to our rear, with a tank ditching

task force to establish a hasty defense around the city of Hafar Al

Batin. With Corps intelligence sources wary of an Iraqi

pre-emptive strike, Alpha Company dispatched four tank ditching

teams (dozer/scraper). With the most tense moments over in two

days, the 92nd was ready to begin the corps' highest priority

             construction project.

PHASE I Log Base and Tactical Assembly Area (TAA)

             Construction

The first mission for the 92nd was to construct Log Base Echo

(LBE), at the time, the most forward located logistical base in the

Saudi theater of operations. Scope of work for LEE mainly included

a 20 km access road into the class V ammunition storage area,

construction of the class V area itself (which included 25 km of

berm construction, 165 km of 'V' ditching and one CH-47 helipad),

a class III Tank Petroleum Transfer (TPT) point, and a 4500' C-130

Forward Landing Strip (with Single Surface Treatment).

Additionally, the battalion constructed 20 km of access roads for

Phases correspond to VII Corps mission intervals. The 92nd joined
VII Corps in the middle of Phase 1.
