was made of this flight and played for assembled officers and
s taf f .'Thus, everyone had a chance to observe the initial area
of operations 2 days prior to the commencement of ground
            combat.

Actions by S-2 personnel began at 1100 23 February 91 when
Regimental Scouts @iri company with STA Platoon 3/9 moved from
the Saudi berm line north across the Kuwait border. The
Scouts were tasked to conduct a route reconnaissance between
the berm area and the LD, and then return to guide the TF
            Headquarters element forward.

By 0200 24 February, the intelligence staff was distributed
in 3 command groups for the attack:

"A" Command C-7 with Captain Trafton
                                       Corporal Delaney

"Al' Command P-7 with Sergeant Kondalci
                                       lst Lt Mohammed
                                       lst Lt Adel

"B" Command C-7 with Captain Buhl
                                       Sergeant Alvarez

S-2 veh. in I.OC with Master Sergeant Valley
                                       Sergeant Conrad
                                       Sergeant Cartica

Phase I (LOD through Breach #2). Intelligence flow from
G--2, lst MarDiv was minimal but the S-2 section monitored TF
Ripper's intel net and gleaned valuable information regarding
the strength of the units within the trench systems behind the
second breach. The enemy encountered was from the 22nd
Brigade, Sth Mechanized Division defending with dug-in T-55
            tanks and extensive trench systems.

Although well-connected and amply supplied with
 lacked coordination.
Addi.tj-<)nal.1y, there was clearly a lack of coordinated indirect
fires and absolutely no massing of fires. The limitations of
Iraqi centralized planned fires was evidenced by a lone
artillery piece firing on the same location for several hours
without adjustment. TF Papa Bear also failed to encounter any
form of enemy electronic warfare, nor was the use of NBC ever
            confirmed.

Phase II (Battle of Burqan). On G+l (25 February) a T-55
tank with two Type 63 APC'S, one being a command variant,
surrendered to the TF Headquarters. This command vehicle included
Mai.or Adai, the CO of the 7th Regiment, 22nd Brigade, of the
Sth Mechanized Division. Additionally, it contained a complete
overlay of the Iraqi 3rd Corp's positions throughout southeast
Kuwait. This information, combined with information from

                                                                   ENCLOSURE: (1)
                                             2-12
